The quality of modern cameras can be far different from those of the film/slide era.

  • Photos taken with high ISO/ASA will have much more grain (ie noise)
  • Photos taken in the dark will cause very grainy and noisy images
  • The quality of the camera and the skill of the photographer will determine the quality of the photograph.
  • Poor focusing cameras and camera shake can not be repaired.

Damaged images:

During the life of film or slides, the can become very scratched or discolored. This is often due to improper storage. I will inform you of any of these images and include them in the scanning. These images can be repaired using my separate restoration service This will be a separate transaction and separate charges will apply based upon degree of damage.

I have the print and the negative, which one should I bring you?

As long as the negative has been kept nicely, no major damage, definitely the negative! For two reasons, first, prints are almost always cropped from the negative, so you may be missing an interesting detail! Also the quality of the print can vary greatly but the negative is always the photo as it was taken.

Gather your prints and lets get started..

Which dpi should I choose for prints?

It depends on two factors:

  1. The size of the current print
  2. The size you intend to print in the future.

Most printers print at 300dpi, so scanning at 600dpi will give you double the potential size!

Small wallet size prints and photos of old ratios (like those square ones in the 70s) should be scanned at higher dpi, as they will need to be cropped when printed with modern formats.
